For sale: 1965 Mercedes W111 220 (sedan)

This 1965 Mercedes 220s was purchased 15 years ago from the original owner. The car is complete, but the carburettors that were reconditioned 20 years ago have not been installed. The car has nicely contrasting red MB leather trim in excellent condition, front disc brakes, etc.

It has a very good straight body, with no rust at all. The paint presents well in most areas (a few scratches and blemishes but very good for original paint).

This was a Canberra car prior to my father owning it. It hasn't been running for 20+ years, but  motor turns by hand. 

There is a tonne of documented history with this car - and it has perhaps the most documented and interesting background of any 220 in Australia.

It was originally purchased by Wing Commander Ernest Michael Carroll on 1 August 1965, with ther purchase receipt indicating it was bought from B A Motors (Mercedes Dealer) in Beatt, Adelaide. Wing Commander Carroll ultimately became an Air Vice Marshall and Chief of Supply in the Dept of Defence. He was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE)

The original receipt is on the file, confirming the car was finished in White DB050, with trim being Tex leather Red, Code 117, with bucket seats, with options listed as "Becker Monte Carlo radio (still fitted today), centre arm rest and cushion, European yellow headlamps, Instruments in MPH and imperial gallons and RHD. The total price new was 1,593 GBP. The original deposit receipt copy iis also with the file. 

EM Carroll collected his car from the factory, and there is a brochure welcoming purchasers and directing them to the pickup locatoin at Sindelfingen, Germany

There is numerous letters/correspondence and servicing records between the original owner (who later became an air vice marshall) and York Motors ACT, from the 1980s, regarding servicing, parts etc.

26 October 1967, Ernest Michael Carroll (Service Number: 016119) was officially promoted from Squadron Leader to the rank of Wing Commander

, new in France from Charles Delecroix (who was the major importer and distributor of Mercedes in Paris dueing the 50s and 60s). We have the original price list for the vehicle. by #### on ####. Despite being purchased new in Germany, it was ordered in RHD configuration.

Since being imported to Australia in ####, the owner resided in Canberra and the car remained there until the late 1990s. It was extensively serviced by Mercedes (York Motors) in Canberra.

Charles Delecroix's company was the historic French importer and distributor for Mercedes-Benz in Paris during the 1950s and 1960s

 including a certificate from Mercedes Benz when it hit 200,000km.

Earliest regiatration in AU is in ACT in Nov 1970, with plate YAK005. In Nov 1971 it wasregistered in NSW underegistration BMF356, whic continued until 10/11/1975 - we have all original rego slips. After that, the car was registered again in the ACT from 5 Nov 1975, unde plate #YGR323.

it was YGR323 in 1982 expiring 05/04/1982, then to 05/11/1983

Service at REI-Mon motors (Mercedes dealer) Moree NSW in 1986. - significant work undertaken.

There are also earlt service records from Mercedes "Lonsdale Motors" in Phillip ACT from the late 70s, early 90s

York motors started trading as Canberra Star Motors in 1988

Swiss Motors of Fyshwick ACT are belieced to have fitted a new long engine on 2 November 1992 at a cost of over $5K

The car comes with an original 220 brochure that was in its file, which also contains a pocket with an original automatic transmission brochure

It comes with its original Mercedes Benx Wiropa service book – confirming all of the service locations across the whole of Europe. There is also a specific German dealership location pamphlet, with an unopened map contained within;

It has its original service books which were first stamped in Australia in October 1977. The servce booko has a date of 14 June 1964, and a date of first registration listed of 21 November 1965.

The car’s first service was in France, on 15/06/1965 by Garage De La Gare, Mercedes Benz, and services in Paris, France, continue through to 25/07/1967, after which the car was exported to Australia, and had its first service at Lonsdale Service Station, Braddon ACT.. Service records and stamps continue in the book up to 118,000 miles. The car’s service manual contains its original vehicle data slips in German “Fahrzeug-Daten”

A new maintenance / service book was issued to him by Mercedes in April 1977, noting 108,000 Miles on the car. Service records /stamps are then recorded in that genuine merc book from 14/01/1976 to 13/08/1984

There is also a serial numbered Becker Radio guarantee warranty slip and original user / service maual, and wiring diagram.

Documents also include a full 220 user manual, as well as the original Mercedes Benz pouch.

File includes a copy of Mr Carol’s international driving licence issued on 24 Nov 1964, presumably in readiness to move to France.

There is also a German registration certificate book dated 9 June 1965, stating the vehicle’s VIN etc – which would have been its first registration in Europe.
